Arrest warrant issued for recently cut NFL player

Share

On the same day the Oakland Raiders released linebacker Aldon Smith, police in San Francisco announced an arrest warrant had been issued for the troubled former NFL player.

Police have been looking for Smith since he left the scene of an alleged domestic violence incident Saturday night in San Francisco.

The victim in the alleged attack, who told TMZ Sports she is Smith’s fiancee, said her parents took Smith to a rehab facility after the incident at Smith’s request.

“I can tell you this … Aldon called my parents and asked them to take him to rehab,” she told TMZ. “He complied. They went and got him. I was not there. My family took him and had him checked in.”

San Francisco police spokesman Sgt. Michael Andraychak said the charges listed on the arrest warrant are willful infliction of corporal injury (domestic violence), assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism.

All of the charges are misdemeanors. Police said the woman involved in the incident suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“The department is working with Mr. Smith’s legal counsel to arrange a day and time for Mr. Smith to surrender himself and to be processed for the warrant,” Andraychak said in a statement provided to KPIX in San Francisco.

During a 911 call of the incident, a dispatcher told police en route to the scene, “(The victim is) yelling, ‘I’m going to call the police.’ Subject says her ex-boyfriend is beating her up. She says the guy’s name is Aldon Smith.”

Should Aldon Smith be banned for life from the NFL?

Smith left the residence where the alleged assault took place before police arrived.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that Smith is also experiencing financial problems.

American Express sued Smith in January, saying he owed the company $118,000 in credit card debt. In September, a federal judge ruled Smith must pay the San Francisco 49ers $341,000 from a portion of his $8.9 million signing bonus after he was suspended for nine games in 2014.

Last month, TMZ reported that Smith asked a judge last month to reduce his child support payments for his 5-year-old son, claiming he can’t afford the $9,000 a month payments while he is suspended from the NFL. He had fallen behind in his payments by $79,000.

Former Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio said via Twitter on Monday that NFL rules that prohibit teams from having contact with players who are suspended by the league need to change so teams can provide support to the players.

Smith — a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2011 — hasn’t played in the NFL since 2015, when he was suspended by the league following a third DUI arrest. He was also investigated for domestic violence last year, but no charges were ever filed.

Smith’s contract with Oakland was set to expire March 14, but the team would have retained his rights if he were reinstated by the NFL.
