Colin Kaepernick spotted on field working out in Texas
Here we go again.
Almost two years ago, it looked like then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was about to be traded to the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos to replace Peyton Manning, who had retired following the end of the previous season.
But the quarterback didn’t want to take a pay cut, and the deal never happened.
Last March, Kaepernick decided to opt out of his contract with the 49ers, leaving the social activist without an NFL team.
That set off one of the biggest stories of last season — would Kaepernick ever find a new home?
As we all know, the answer so far has been a resounding “No!”
There have been plenty of rumors — as well as talk of him being blackballed due to his controversial national anthem protest — but nothing of substance regarding Kaepernick, you know, actually playing.
That is, until Thursday.
With the quarterback carousel spinning around the league, Kaepernick was spotted honing his craft in Houston, Texas. He worked out for roughly 90 minutes, during which time he scrambled around and threw passes of all distances.
There was tight security on the field, and though Kaepernick didn’t talk to reporters, he did appear to be in good shape.
Nobody seemed to know why Kaepernick was in Houston, and the Texans said they were unaware of his workout.
Ironically, the video made the rounds on the internet the same day that Kirk Cousins (one career playoff start) signed a 3-year, $84 million deal with Minnesota, and veteran backup Chase Daniel (two starts in 8 years) got a 2-year, $10 million contract in Chicago.
Kaepernick, in case you forgot, has a 4-2 record in the postseason and led San Francisco to the 2013 Super Bowl.
In his last season with the 49ers, however, the team finished 2-14, although he did throw 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions.
Putting all politics aside, it does seem remarkable that Kaepernick is still on the sidelines. We’ll have to see what’s next for him.
