Drew Brees picks his team

Share

Free agent quarterback Drew Brees is officially off the market.

The 39-year-old superstar quarterback has inked a new deal with the very same team he’s been leading for the last 12 seasons.

Brees and the New Orleans Saints have come to an agreement on a two-year, $50 million deal that will likely ensure that Brees retires as a Saint.

NFL Network’s Jane Slater is reporting that the two-year deal will also include $27 million in guaranteed money.

Frankly, this move shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

From all indications, Brees seems like a loyal person and genuinely loves the city of New Orleans.

But even from a football perspective, sticking in New Orleans makes plenty of sense for Brees.

The Saints are easily coming off their best draft class in years, and possibly ever, giving Brees a rising young team that can help carry him as age and attrition settle in. Alvin Kamara, Marshon Lattimore, Ryan Ramczyk and Marcus Williams all have legitimate claims to being a top-five player at their respective positions and should only improve in their sophomore seasons.

Do you think it's a smart move for the Saints to sign Drew Brees to a two-year, $50 million deal?

On top of that, Brees has developed long-term chemistry with Michael Thomas and Mark Ingram.

No team in need of a quarterback was ever going to offer Brees that same quality of young talent and chemistry.

The Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings both offered stellar defenses, but not the versatile weapons that Brees has rapport with in New Orleans.

The Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets all need quarterbacks, but can’t offer Brees a legitimate playoff-contending team.

Brees is primarily responsible for the only NFC South division titles, NFC championship win and Super Bowl victory in Saints franchise history.

Super Bowl XLIV was the high point of Brees’ time with the Saints, as they upended the favored Indianapolis Colts and fellow future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

The free agent market is rapidly taking shape. Case Keenum has reportedly signed a deal with the Broncos, still leaving free agent quarterbacks Sam Bradford, Kirk Cousins and Teddy Bridgewater as candidates for needy teams.

In the draft, there are numerous tantalizing quarterback prospects such as Sam Darnold of USC, Josh Rosen of UCLA, Lamar Jackson of Louisville and Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma, Josh Allen of Wyoming who will likely go in the first round, although none is a guaranteed star.
