Tony Romo's pro golf dreams crushed at tour debut

Share

Tony Romo’s PGA Tour debut at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic started off promising.

But then, the wheels came off and the former Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL analyst ended up dead last in the field. Romo finished the second round at 15-over-par for the tournament and missed the cut.

Things looked good for Romo in round one, as he was even par through 12 holes. But then, he struggled over the last six holes, and finished with a first-round score of 5-over 77.

Things really went south on Friday.

Romo bogeyed his first six holes in round two and shot a 44 on the front nine.

Things were only slightly better on the back 9, and he finished his day at 10-over 82.

Romo missed the cut by 16 strokes and finished six shots behind his next closest competitor.

“I lipped out three or four putts early, some short putts that kind of got me almost a little bit pressing,” Romo said, according to Golf Digest. “I just didn’t hit the irons very good today. The back nine’s 4,000-some yards, so when you’re not hitting those, well you’re going to have tough shots.”

Do you think Romo should stick to football?

However, the 37-year-old remains undeterred in his quest to succeed at professional golf.

“Short-sided a few times, made too many mistakes. So a lot of stuff to learn from, and in a good way. I’ll be able to kind of assess why I didn’t play as well as I wanted to and then you go attack it. In a month from now I think we’ll see things a little better,” Romo added.

Romo had received a sponsor exemption to compete in the event.

In recent years, he’s been trying to qualify for the U.S. Open. So far he’s been unsuccessful, but he still has frequently played as an amateur in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Another athlete who’s attempted to make a second career as a professional golfer is NBA star Stephen Curry. The Golden State Warriors point guard played in a Web.com Tour event last summer, and while he missed the cut, he shot a 4-over in two rounds and finished ahead of several golfers.
