Top QB recruit rescinds commitment to Notre Dame, reveals new choice

Share

Three and a half years after Notre Dame’s football team defeated Michigan 31-0, the Wolverines got some measure of revenge, albeit through recruiting.

Cade McNamara, a top quarterback prospect from Nevada, decommitted from the Irish earlier this month and announced this week he has verbally committed to the University of Michigan instead.

McNamara — a junior at Damonte Ranch — originally said in July 2017 he would attend Notre Dame, but then received scholarship offers from the likes of Michigan, USC and Alabama afterwards.

He said in a March 2 Twitter post that he had decommitted from the Fighting Irish, but did not provide details as to why he was backing out.

On March 13, the writing seemed to be on the wall as to where McNamara would end up, as he retweeted a post from Barstool Sports’ Michigan account.

Three days later, McNamara made it official, changing his Twitter bio to include the words “Michigan QB Commit.”

He also posted this message:

McNamara is rated as a four-star prospect by 247 Sports and is considered the top high school quarterback in Nevada. He is the ninth-ranked pro-style quarterback in America, and is among the ESPN 300 for the top-ranked juniors in the nation.

Do you think McNamara will be successful at Michigan?

A starter since his freshman year, McNamara has thrown for over 9,000 yards in his high school career, with 107 touchdowns compared to just 29 interceptions.

McNamara said Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is a big part of why he chose the Maize and Blue.

“I’m super excited about my commitment. So excited to have finally found the true perfect fit,” he told the Reno Gazette Journal.

“I love coach Harbaugh as a man and a competitor. The entire staff is very competitive and cohesive. Michigan just feels like home.”

McNamara is the sixth player in the Class of 2019 to commit to Michigan, joining offensive lineman Chris Hinton and several other four-star recruits.

Though Michigan has no clear-cut starting starter under center heading into the 2018 regular season, quarterback Shea Patterson recently decided to transfer there from Ole Miss. Patterson would normally have to redshirt a year after transferring, but with Ole Miss facing an NCAA investigation, that requirement could be waived if it’s determined that the Rebels misled Patterson while they were recruiting him.

According to CBS Sports, the ruling on Patterson’s eligibility for the 2018 season will come later this month or in early April.
