Watch: One of the wildest game-winning buzzer-beaters ever sends announcer bananas

Share

March Madness isn’t a solely American phenomenon.

They just take it more literally in Iceland.

That country’s Dominos basketball league featured a playoff matchup between Haukar and Keflavik on Tuesday.

With the score tied at 82, Haukar’s Kari Jonsson threw up a prayer from the opposite free-throw line as time expired — and it went in.

Jonsson and his teammates were screaming and jumping with excitement over the miraculous buzzer-beater.

But that was nothing compared with the crazed reaction of the announcers.

While it’s anyone’s guess what they were saying, the fact that they were shouting in Icelandic sure made it seem more dramatic.

The 6-foot-3 Jonsson is no stranger to American basketball.

Have you ever seen a better buzzer-beater than this?

In the 2016-17 season, he played at Drexel University in Philadelphia, where he averaged 10.1 points per game and shot 43.6 percent from 3-point range to lead the Colonial Athletic Association.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get a taste of March Madness that year; Drexel was an awful 9-23.

Jonsson decided to leave the team last October to return to Iceland and go pro.

“I think he will have a very good professional career and I wish him the best,” Drexel coach Zach Spiker told The Philadelphia Inquirer at the time.

So far, so good: The 20-year-old Jonsson is leading his top-seeded team with 20.2 points per game.

The victory Tuesday gave Haukar a 2–0 lead over Keflavikin in the best-of-five playoff series.

But even if they blow the next three games, they’ll have a moment none of them will ever forget.
